23. PALAESTRA SCENE (pi. 124).
Fragment.
-24 m. x-26 m. Preserved: the Hercules except the head, the whole inter-
columniation on the 1., and a small fragment of the next to the 1. with the foot of the
vase. The slab is broken away close to the r. of the Hercules and all the upper part
is missing. No traces of colour.
The complete slab showed a row of columns, in the centre of which,
on a square base with mouldings at top and bottom, is a statue of Hercules
full-face. The lion-skin fastened on the r. shoulder covers the 1. shoulder,
breast, and arm. In his r. hand he holds the club pointing obliquely
downwards. The space between the next two columns on 1. is smaller ;
it contains a bearded herm. The next space to the 1. was occupied by a
large vase, of which only a fragment of the lower part is preserved. The
columns are fluted, and those on either side of the middle higher than the
rest.
Middle of first century A. D.
