26. CHARIOTS IN CIRCUS (pi. 124).

hind-quarters and top of the head of the horse on the r. Purple on head and shoulders
of third horse to 1., on man upon ground and on hind quarters of horse rounding the
yellow on lower parts of
Above, a row of palmettes with corded festoons between. A yzza^rzjga
moving to the r. The four horses, turned slightly to the front, gallop
forward with forefeet raised ; the heads of the three on the r. are drawn
in, that on the 1. raised. The ^zzar/rz^a is about to reach the turning-
point in the course. This is represented by a low ^zfzzzzzz on which are
three conical pillars decorated with horizontal bands. On the top of each
is a pine-cone. In front of them, almost under the horses' feet, is a figure
dressed as a charioteer, but without his bands, facing the horses on
hands and knees with raised head. A horseman has already made
the turn and is disappearing behind the ?7z<?/%<?. He wears the same
clothes as the other two and beats his horse's flank with a short riding
whip. The explanation of the scene is uncertain, but perhaps represents
a mishap in a chariot-race. The subject is completed from slabs found
at Ostia (Ah/. &*%&., 1909, p. 1*78 f. and hg. 10), and elsewhere.

27. MALE MASK IN SCROLLS (pi. 123).
Incomplete slab.
-38 m. x -39 rn. Pat together from fragments but not restored. Wanting : a
quarter at the top and the lower corner on the r. No traces of colour.
Above, a row of palmettes alternately of rzzz/Wzzzz'czz and of regular
form.
The decoration consists of scrolls and palmettes enclosing a central
space in which is a male mask full-face, perhaps of a sea-god. He is
represented with heavy features, large moustache in the form of leaves
and thick dishevelled hair. Below on each side of this mask are two
spaces filled by smaller comic masks with large open mouths.
