GIARDINO 29-33

29. HEAD AND TORSO OF SATYR (PMARSYAS) (pi. 87).
H. 1-10 m. Luna, marble. Unrestored. The head has been broken off and
roughly reset.
Head and torso of bearded Satyr with head to 1. Arms broken at
shoulder, and legs at groin. The head is injured, but the type of the
Satyr is given with much force and spirit. Hair brushed up from the
forehead in disordered locks. Beard long and straggling. Body spare
and sinewy; cheeks puffed out.
Identified by Ameiung (in Helbig^, /. r. z*72/Az) as Marsyas in
competition with Apoho. Ameiung believes this to be a true copy of an
Hellenistic original, of which the Borghese satyr (HelbigC 1564) is a
somewhat baroque adaptation dating from early Imperial times.
Very fair work.
Found near the Auditorium of Maecenas.
Now (1924) removed to the *Sb/<2 ArfazA'.

(pi. 90).
II. -28 nr. Marble, rg&arrzlwg. Unrestored.

belonged to a fountain, and seems modern.
