Dr. Andrzej Betlej, Dr. Sławomir Skrzyniarz and Kata-
rzyna Brzezina M.A. were employed in the Institute
at the beginning of the academic year 1999/2000.
An editorial series “Ars Vetus et Nova” began to appear
under the auspices of the Institute since 1999
(altogether 25 volumes will have appeared by the
end of 2007); there also appeared the yearbook of
the Institute of Art History entitled Modus. Prace
z Historii Sztuki [Modus. Papers on Art History],
1 March - Anna Baranowa M.A. was employed as
librarian at the Institute’s library.
30 April-2 May - An academic session organized by the
Institute of Art History and the Austrian Consulate
General in Cracow was held in the Exhibition-
Conference Centre of the Wawel Royal Castle; the
session was entitled: Public Green Spaces in Place of
the Former 18th- and 19th-c. Fortifications. Fonns
- Functions - Transformations.
19 June - Prof. Jerzy Gadomski was elected correspon-
ding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and
Sciences.
1 September - Ass. Prof. Adam Małkiewicz was elected
for the third time to the post of director of the
Institute (until 30 Sept. 2002). Dr. Wojciech Balus
became his deputy.
22 September-31 October - The exhibition Pax et
bonum. Treasures of the Cracow Poor Clares was held
in the Arsenal of the Princes Czartoryski Museum;
the exhibition was organized by the Institute and the
Princes Czartoryski Foundation. Katarzyna Plonka-
Balus and Andrzej Wlodarek were curators of the
exhibition.
23 October - An academic session accompanying the
exhibition Pax et bonum. Treasures of the Cracow
Poor Clares, was organized on the occasion of
the 800th anniversary of the foundation of St.
Andrew’s church and the 100th anniversary of Prof.
Adam Bochnak’s birthday.
19 November - A symposium on Aby Warburg and
Albrecht Diirer, whose co-organizer was the Goethe-
Institut (Cracow), was held.
26 November - Dr. Marek Zgórniak obtained
postdoctoral degree on the basis of a dissertation
Matejko w Paryżu. Opinie krytyków francuskich
z lat 1865-1870 [Matejko in Paris. The Reviews of
the French Critics from the Years 1865-1870],

Dr. Sławomir Skrzyniarz became assistant in the
Department of Byzantine Art History.
Dr Marek Walczak became adjunct professor in the
Department of Medieval Art History.
Katarzyna Brzezina obtained doctor’s degree in
humanities.
14 March - At a session of the combined Commissions
on Art History and Archaeology of the Polish
Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow and at an
academic session of the Institute of Archaeology
and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in
Warsaw (on 15 June), the results of the research
conducted under the supervision of Dr. Teresa
Rodzińska-Chorąży and Dr. Tomasz Węcławowicz
in the church of St. John the Baptist in Giecz were
presented. The students from the Institute of Art
History also participated in the research project. It
was continued in 2001.
21 May - Mr Franciszek Wojtowicz, who had been
working at the Institute for almost 50 years, died (he
was employed as janitor on 2 May 1950).
31 July - Ass. Prof. Marcin Fabiański obtained the title of
full professor.
22-23 September - An academic session Art on the
Eastern Borderlands of the Former Polish Republic,
organized by the Institute in co-operation with the
Cracow branch of the “Wspólnota Polska” Associa-
tion, was organized.
24-26 September - An academic session Byzantium and
the East Central Europe was organized by the
Institute of Art History in co-operation with the
Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University.
1 October - Helena Małkiewicz M.A. was appointed
senior specialist.
20-21 October - On the occasion of Prof. Kalinowski’s
eightieth birthday, jubilee celebrations followed by
an academic session entitled “The Art of Cracow”
Today were organized by the Institute of Art History
of the Jagiellonian University and the Cracow
branch of the Association of Art Historians.
30 October - A presentation of the books purchased
from the funds granted by The Getty Grant Program
and donated by the heirs of Prof. Catherine Brisac
from Paris, was held in the Institute library.
2001
Dr. Andrzej Szczerski became assistant in the
Department of Modern and Contemporary Art
History.
Prof. Jacek Purchla and Dr. Zbigniew Beiersdorf moved
to the newly created Faculty of International and
Political Studies of the Jagiellonian University.
20 February - Prof. Malkiewicz’s book Theoria et Praxis
was awarded the title of the Cracow Book of the
Month.
5 May - Prof. Porębski celebrated his eightieth birthday.
On this occasion he was presented a commemora-
tive volume entitled Mistrzowi uczniowie [Students
to Their Master]; the Rector of the University,
Professor Franciszek Ziejka presented him with
a Medal issued on the 600th anniversary of the
restoration of the Jagiellonian University.
26 May - Prof. Anna Różycka Bryzek was presented
a jubilee volume Ars Graeca - Ars Latina. The
ceremony was accompanied by a session of the
Byzantological Commission of the Committee of
Ancient Culture Sciences of the Polish Academy of
Sciences.
18 June - Ass. Prof. A. Małkiewicz obtained the title of
full professor.
