beautiful ssyle, I resolved to relinquish and
abandon the whole. On perusing it again, it
appeared to me, that for the truths which it
contained, it ought not to remain in oblivion,
and that these truths might be useful to many ;
srom which ressexions, and by persuafion os
my friend Winkelman, to whom I have dedi-
cated it, I was induced, at last, to prepare it
for publication. I Ihould not with, otherwise,
to give it my name, because I am no author by
profession, nor do I with to expose myself to
the criticism of those, who, perhaps, will not
underhand me.
I entreat the Students of Painting, who read
this Treatise, to read it with the greatest atten-
tion, and to be persuaded that they will find,
by the reasonings, and the tracks therein indi-
cated, that I am arrived in the Art of Painting to
a higher degree than many of my contempo-
raries ; and to be assured, likewise, that the
work which I now offer them is the gift of my
hearts If they resseX well upon what I ad-
vance, and to such ressections unite unwearied
diligence, and uninterrupted application, I can
assert that they will receive advantages of no
inferior nature.
My intention has been, first, to explain
what is beauty, since men are of such various
opinions upon this lubjeX. Secondly, to ex-
plain what is Taste, as the major part of those
who have written on the same do not give a
clear insormation how the word taste it
used in speaking of Painting. Finally, I have
