THE LAKE OF ALBANO.
This Lake, the view of which is taken from below the convent of
the Capuchins of Albano, is bordered with woods and with rocks, and
presents a prospect of admirable beauty, which varies at almost every
step of the traveller. It is of great depth, and circular like the crater
of a volcano : and its supplies of waters from the adjacent mountains
are so large that it has frequently threatened the country about Rome
with an inundation : on this account the Romans, in obedience to the
oracle of Delphos, cut a channel for the passage of its superfluous
waters. From hence a shady road leads to Castello Gandolpho, a mag-
nificent palace, which was erected by the popes for their summer
residence. In the distant ground we see the city and the campagna of
Rome ; and the mountain St. Oreste breaks the uniform line of the
horizon. On a level with this lake, are two grottos or chambers, built
with large stones, and communicating with the channel, by which the
waters are discharged : this channel is two miles in length.

CyE Lac, dont la vue est prise au-dessous des murs des Capuchins
d’Albano, est bordé d’arbres et de rochers ; il offre un aspect, dont la
beauté frappe d’admiration, et dont les effets varient pour ainsi dire à
chaque pas. Il est profond, et de forme ronde comme celle du cratère
du Volcan qui le forma, lorsque le terrain venant à s’écrouler il se fit un
abyme qui se remplit d’eau , elle y vint en telle abondance des montagnes
voisines qui plusieurs fois la campagne de Rome fut menacée d’inondation’
ce qui engagea les Romains, d’après l’oracle de Delphos, à creuser un
canal appellé émissaire ; pour donner un écoulement à l’eau. On va par
un chemin ombragé à Castel Gandolphe, où les papes ont fait bâtir un
magnifique palais, pour y aller passer la belle saison. Dans le lointain on
voit la ville et la campagne de Rome, et le mont S. Oreste rompt l’unifor-
mité de l’horizon. Au niveau de ce lac on trouve deux grottes ou salles,
bâties de grosses pierres, qui font l’entrée de l’emissaire ; qui a 2 milles de
longueur.
