THE LAKE OF NEMI.
SPECULUM DIANÆ—THE MIRROR OF DIANA.
This lake is bordered by high mountains, and a forest, which was
anciently called the Aricinian. This whole district, indeed, obtained the
name of Nemi from the Latin word Nemus, which signifies a forest. On
an elevated spot, in the midst of these woods and rocks, the Temple of
Diana Taurica once stood, of which, it is pretended that the tower adjoin-
ing to the castle of Nemi constituted a part. On the opposite side of
the lake is the beautiful village of Gensano, celebrated at Rome for the
goodness of its wines. The waters of this lake being generally tranquil,
the poets have called them the Mirror of Diana. This temple, which was
so much frequented by the ancient Latins, was the occasion of the build-
ing of the village. In the distant ground we see the Mount Jove, the
commencement of the Pontine Marshes, and the sea in the horizon termi-
nating the prospect.

mer termine l’horizon.
