VOL. I. Page 99. After palace at Mnevis,
subjoin the following note :
In the original it is ubifuit Mnevidis regia. Petr.
Angel. BargvEus T>e Obelifc. is for altering the
reading to Memnonis regia \ but I can fee no Ef-
sicient foundation for so hazardous a conjecture :
sor we may eafily conceive that there was fuch a
place as Mnevis, tho' not mentioned by any other
writer that has continued to the prefent time : Or
the palace might be called the palace of Mnevis, in
honour of the Apis who was worfhiped at Heliopolis
under the name of Mnevis.
Page ibid. I have the pleasure to find my con-
jecture concerning the falfe reading in Pliny con-
sirmed by the abovementioned author, who changes
the word undecenis into undecentenis -, but I am afraid
there is no claffical authority for the ufe of fuch a
word. I have fince likewife been informed that the

learned doctor Jackson is os the same fentiments
with regard to thefalfe reading in Pliny in his Chro-
nology, and changes the word into undecentum %
which indeed is a word that Pliny himsels ufes in
another place.
Page 102. Line 3. After earth, add, This cbe-
UJk has 'lately been dug out of the ruins -where it lay
buried, by the orders os pope Benedict XIV. A
learned treatife has been written concerning the obelijk,
^vAngelo Maria Bandini. Printed at Rome,
1750.
VOL. II. Page 45. Aster the Quotation from
Pomponius Mela add,
Strabo fays, that the length alone os the city
Thebes was eighty ftadia, that is ten miles. In fuch a
vaft extent os ground as this muft confequently have
slood on, I fee no improbability that it had really
an hundred gates as Homer has defcribed it.
