Continuation of the author's voyage in his return from Deir,
or D e r r i, to Cairo.

Tuesday, 7^ of January.
E had continued the whole night to make use os the
oar ; we plied it likewise the whole day; and in the
evening at eight o'clock we had already pasTed
G u r t a. That day our reys took it into his head to
mimick the tyrant. He thought that, aster the example
of his matter, he might also extort money srom us.
He demanded sisty sevillans, above the price that had
been granted him j and threatned to carry us back to
Derri, is we refused to give him that fum. Luckily
he had not, like Bar am cacheff, the power in his
hands. We let him know, therefore, that if he ever dared afterwards to talk to
Us in fuch a manner, he might be aflured, that we would throw him, without
Ceremony, into the Nile, and that we would take care ourselves to navio-ate the
barque. This menace made him change his language. He said, that his in-
tention was not to exacT: any thing of us; that he had only a mind to jeft, but
he hoped however that we would be generous enough to make him fome
