At eight o'clock in the evening, the prince os Achmiin arrived in a barque,
accompanied by six others. He did not stop long ; he departed a little time
after in the same manner as he came, that is to say, with the noise os kettle-
drums that he had on board. We followed him pretty close; and we arrived a
little before midnight at
Ac h m 11 n. We there fattened the barque, in order to take up our sathers, who
had gone thither by land in the morning.
I observed an issand, which the Nile had formed this year, opposite to
Messchie, which is on the other side of the river. The prince os Achmiin had
taken possesiion of it; but it was dilputed him by his neighbours, the inha-
bitants of Uladjachchia, who pretended that it belonged to them, and there was
a law suit between them.

Friday, 14th of February.
THE fathers came and joined us early in the morning. The agent os the
prince, and several others, who were Roman catholick Christians, accompanied
them to the barque. These latter made us divers little presents, consisting os
bread, dates, and spirituous liquors drawn from the same sruit, £&sV. We gave
them, in return, some images, Jerusalem chaplets, and other trisles that were
agreeable to them.
We took leave of them, and departed, with very sine weather, which conti-
nued till sive o'clock in the evening. The wind then began to rise, and became
very strong. This obliged us to put to shore at
M a r a g a. The Nile had carried away hals os this village. As this accident
had happened in the Course os the year, the reys did not know that the ruins had
sormed divers banks in the Nile. When we applied to the oar, aster a sew hours
we struck upon one os these banks. Our people attempted at sirft to disengao-e
the barque, but when they saw that their essorts were in vain, they went to reft.
Opposite Maraga, the mountains approach very near to the river ; and we
see there abundance os grottos.

AT break os day, our people threw themselves into the river, and swam to the
land, in order to draw off our barque by means os a cord. They succeeded in
it. We then made the best os our way, and we had very soon palsed

GauScherkie. I was willing to fee an ancient temple which is in this place.
The imprudence os our failors baulked me of the hope, with which I had
ssattered myfelf. The inhabitants os divers villages, fituated along the Nile, have
