The Frontiers in Dutch Coin Research:
Iron Age and Roman Republican Coin Finds
in the Limes-area

ABSTRACT: Pelsdonk researched about 5,000 Iron Age and Roman coins
dating up to AD 14. He shows the importance of coin-find databases like the Dutch
NUMIS, in which over 275,000 coins from all periods are recorded, including about
1,600 coin hoards. What do coin finds teach us about the interaction between local
tribes and the Romans? The Roman limes cuts the Netherland into two roughly
eąual parts. This makes it possible to research the effect of the Roman presence
in the ‘Barbarian’ North.

ABSTRAKT: Granice w holenderskich badaniach nad monetą: znaleziska
monet z okresu żelaza i Rzymskiej Republiki na obszarze Limesu
Pelsdonk poddał analizie około 5000 monet z epoki żelaza i okresu rzym-
skiego, datowanych nie później niż 14 rok n.e. Na przykładzie holenderskiej bazy
NUMIS wykazał duże znaczenie baz gromadzących dane na temat znalezisk. Baza
NUMIS zawiera informacje o 275 000 monet z różnych okresów, w tym o 1600
skarbach monetarnych. Jakie informacje na temat interakcji pomiędzy lokalnymi
plemionami a Rzymianami możemy uzyskać ze znalezisk monetarnych? Rzymski
limes dzieli obszar dzisiejszej Holandii na dwie prawie równe części. Dzięki temu
możliwe jest zbadanie skutków obecności Rzymian na „barbarzyńskiej” północy.
