Early Medieval Axe-like Iron Bar
in the Collection of the Numismatic Cabinet,
National Museum in Kraków

ABSTRACT: Among the objects of interest recently donated to the Numis-
matic Cabinet of the National Museum in Kraków, there is an axe-like iron bar.
This object does not have any specific archaeological context and unfortunately
can only be determined as a find with no specific location in the upper Vistula
basin. Madę of iron, the bar is similar in form to an elongated axe and represents
the so-called Lesser Poland type. Artefacts of this kind have been dated to the 9th
century, i.e., to the period prior to the creation of the structure of the early Piast
State. The function of axe-like bars has been a subject of scholarly debate for years.
It is now predominantly assumed that they were a deliberately standardized form
of iron materiał; at the same time, they may have functioned as money.

ABSTRAKT: Wczesnośredniowieczna grzywna siekieropodobna ze zbiorów
Gabinetu Numizmatycznego Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie
Jednym z ciekawych obiektów, które ostatnio podarowano do zbiorów Ga-
binetu Numizmatycznego Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie, jest grzywna sie-
kieropodobna. Obiekt pozbawiony jest kontekstu archeologicznego i niestety
można go określić jedynie jako znalezisko bez dokładnej lokalizacji w dorzeczu
górnej Wisły. Grzywna została wykuta z żelaza, formą przypomina wydłużoną
siekierę i reprezentuje tzw. typ małopolski. Zabytki takie są datowane na IX wiek,
tj. na okres przed powstaniem struktur państwa pierwszych Piastów. Od lat prowa-
dzone są dyskusje nad funkcją grzywien siekieropodobnych. Obecnie przeważają
poglądy, że były one celowo standaryzowaną formą surowca żelaznego, a zarazem
mogły pełnić funkcję pieniężną.
