An interesting Celtic Coin
of the Pełczyska Type Found in Slovakia

ABSTRACT: In 2014, an interesting N-stater of the Pełczyska type was
found in the Southwest of Slovakia. This was the first discovery of this type
of coin in this area. Finds of these coins usually occur in Southern, but also partly
in central, Poland. The coin was found in a place intensively inhabited in the La
Tene period from LT C2 to LT D2, which place forms part of the wider hinterland
of the oppidum there. Apart from this coin, morę Celtic coins dating back to
LT C2-LT D2 have been found here.

ABSTRAKT: Interesująca moneta celtycka typu Pełczyska znaleziona
na Słowacji
W 2014 roku na terenie południowo-wschodniej Słowacji znaleziono 14 cel-
tyckiego statera typu Pełczyska. Jest to pierwsze znalezisko tego typu monety na
wspomnianym obszarze. Znaleziska monet typu Pełczyska znane są głównie z ob-
szaru południowej oraz środkowej Polski. Opisywana moneta została znaleziona
na terenie intensywnie zamieszkałym w okresie od LT C2 do LT D2 i stanowią-
cym szerokie zaplecze oppidum. Obok wspomnianego egzemplarza z tego obszaru
znane są również znaleziska innych monet celtyckich datowane na ten sam okres.

In 2014, an interesting Celtic coin was discovered in the area between
the villages Blatne and Śenkvice in the Southwest of Slovakia (Fig. 1), near
the road connecting both yillages and a water basin. The findspot is cłose to
Senkvice, only several meters east of the village. This area was intensively
inhabited by the Celts; hence, there is nothing surprising about the finding of
a Celtic coin here. However, this is the first time that this type of coin was found
in Slovakia.
