New finds of metal objects have resulted from the recently conducted
surface survey of the settlement micro-region situated near the burial ground
of the Przeworsk culture at Michałowice, site 1, Czarnocin Commune. These
finds are in keeping with evidence associating this area with the period of Roman
influence. Finds like this usually facilitate a morę precise analysis of the various
issues connected to the cultural transformations within the Przeworsk culture
and other cultures of the European Barbaricum. Morę results of non-invasive
testing are being published, as are the results of systematic examinations using
metal detectors, though morę of both are still needed.1 As regards metal detectors,
the morę widespread use of such devices makes it possible to discover an increasing
number of artefacts thus far regarded as rare or even uniąue.
There is no doubt that finds of Roman coins make up the category of artefacts
discovered in the largest numbers. It should be noted that a large number of artefacts
from the Roman period are found through illegal exploring, freąuently undertaken
by prospectors lacking adeąuate knowledge that would ensure systematic
extraction and the proper documentation of the finds. It seems to be the case that
an overwhelming majority of the metal artefacts being unearthed in Poland do not
enter into the academic records, but this particular problem is beyond the subject
matter of this article, and it would cali for broader commentary. This phenomenon
has already caused a major public problem that puts many archaeological sites
in danger.2
The coins described in the present text were found during surface exploration
of the settlement area surrounding the burial ground of the Przeworsk culture
at Michałowice, Czarnocin Commune, where excavations have been conducted
sińce 2008.3 One of the settlemenfs sites which has been under examination
yielded a large number of interesting artefacts was site no. 13 in Malżyce and
which is located in the lower area of a hillside with an eastem exposure. The size
of this site - determined by the area where the dispersed pottery materiał was found
- is less than 1.5 ha. This location has never been excavated before, and, as a result,
conclusions as to the function and naturę of the site are dependent on the outcome
of the futurę explorations. What is certain, however, is that the publication of
the minor finds discovered so far shall be a contribution to the numismatic research
on Roman coins in the territories of the Barbariami.
