Barbarian Imitations of Ancient Coins
in the Territory of Belarus

ABSTRACT: Until recently, finds of imitation ancient coins have been unknown
in the territory of present-day Belarus. However, the study of hoards of Roman
coins and the monitoring of finds by treasure hunters have revealed the existence
of at least 12 such coins, of which three are imitations of Philip IFs tetradrachms,
and nine, imitations of issues of the Roman Empire.
All three imitations of Macedonian tetradrachms represent the Hu§i-Vovrie§ti
type. Their production is related to the Thracian tribes and distribution to the north
with the migrations of the Getae. The finds discussed here were taken from the
right-bank of the Dnieper River basin, in the south-west part of Mahiloü Voblast’
or in the contact zone between the Milograd and Dnieper-Dvina cultures.
The imitations of the Roman coins are represented by eight imitations of denarii
and one imitation of an aureus. Seven of the nine specimens, including the imitation
of Probus’ aureus, come from the south-west part of Belarus, from the territory
related to the Wielbark culture and featuring the greatest concentration of Roman
imperial coins. Another find is situated in the basin of the middle course of the Dvina
River and may be related to the artefacts of the horizon of champleve enamels from
the 3rd-4th centuries AD. Finally, an imitation of Commodus’ denarius was found
in the westernmost part of Grodna Voblast’.
