ANALYSIS OF FAUNAL REMAINS
FROM SECTOR IV AT NOYAE

Introduction

Stiidies of faunal remains from Novae to datę include the finds from the West-
ern Sector - areas V, VIII [Schramm 1975] and IX and X [Schramm 1975;
Schramm 1979]. Remains from area XI were also analyzed [Gręzak, Lasota-
Moskalewska 1998; Gręzak, Piątkowska-Małecka 1999]. The materiał was dat-
ed to the late lst century, tum of the 2nd century and the 4th and 5th centuries AD.
The currently analyzed materiał originates from the explorations conducted
in 2001 in area IV, where it has been assigned a datę in the 3rd/4th centuries AD.
MATERIAŁ AND METHODS
The materiał used in the analysis includes 927 faunal remains. Of this, 51
(6.3%) remain unidentified. The materiał was preserved in good condition, the
bones being only insignificantly fragmented.
Species and anatomical identification was madę, as well as - occasionally -
age, gender and size of the animals. Age at death was determined based on the
dentition [Lutnicki 1972] and the degree of epiphysial fusion of long bones [Kolda
1936]. To determine size, osteometric data and appropriate indices were used:
according to Fock and Matolcsi for cattle (cited after Driesch, Boessneck 1974),
according to Kiesewalter for horses (cited after Driesch, Boessneck 1974), ac-
cording to Teichert for sheep (cited after Driesch, Boessneck 1974), according
to Schramm (1967) for goat, and according to Koudelka for dog (cited after Dri-
esch, Boessneck 1974). To determine cattle morphology, the point method was
also applied [Lasota-Moskalewska, Kobryń 1989].
RESULTS
Taxonomic distribution
A definite majority of the remains represented mammals - 746 (98.1%). The
rest belonged to birds (11 pieces), fish (2 pieces) and invertebrates (mollusks 1
