^uabe, tbe monlcs, desirous of restoring it, sold tbsir Bapbael, wbicb bad
been mucb injured, to Bope Bius VI., in 1789, for a considerable 8um.
lire picture was cut into several pieces, wbicb were bung up in a room nt
tbe Vatican ; tire/ disappeared at tire time of tire Brsncb invasion.
Ibese labours terminated, tbe /oung artist returnecl to Berugia, anci
tbere paintecl several pictures of large ancl small si^e. ^.ll bear tbe
impress of tbe scbool of Berugino, ancl sometimes contain wbole bgures
from tbat master's worbs, probably because tbe/ were executed for bim.
lbvsn wben Bapbael at tbis time painted bis own compositions, tbs/
differed little from tbose of Berugino, except b/ a mors spiritual senti-
ment, a more clelicate observation of nature, and a sligbt tinge of bis own
individuality, wbicb was beginning to be visible.
In tbe number of tbe small pictures of tbis bind, we count two wings
for a Madonna of Berugino's, now lost. Vbe/ represent a Lt. Oatberine
and a Lt. Mar/ Magdalene. Ibe/ are now united in a single frame, and
form a part of tbe ricb collection of tbe Obevalier V. Oamuccini at Bome.
It was certain!/, too, under tbs iniluence of bis master, tbat be
executed tbe "Madonna" belonging to tbe Oountess Zbnna Zbllani, at
Berugia. De added, bowever, according to bis fatber's custom, two
cbarming cberubim beads in tbe upper corners, lbs delicac/ of tbe
toucb, and tbe sentiment wbicb animates tbe beads, also betra/ tbe
band of Bapbael, wbose initial letters, "B. v. V.," are found on tbe
breast of tbe Virgin's garments.
Ibe museum of Berlin also possesses a Madonna of tbe same period,
and for wbicb Bapbael. must undoubted!/ bave made use of a sbetcb of
Berugino's, preserved in tbe Zblbertine collection at Vienna. Ibis valuable
little picture, of ver/ careful execution, sbows tbe Virgin contemplating tbs
Obilcl wbo is seated on a cusbion on ber lap. On eitber side are Lt. Je-
rome and Lt. Brancis, standing in adoration. Ibe bgures are balf lengtb.
Z^notber small Madonna, also in tbe Berlin Museum, appears to us to
belong to tbe same time as tbe " Lrucibxion," for tbe cburcb of tbe
Dominicans at Oitta di Lastello. Ibis came from tbe Loll/ Lollection.
According to Lanab, a letter of Bapbael's, written at tbis time, and
addressed to a friend, must bave been found among tbs manuscripts of
Lardinal Borgia. Ibe /oung painter of blrbino expresses in it bis ^'0/ at
an order be bad received from Madonna Maddalena clegli Oddi, and at
tbat lad/, wbo possessed great iniluence, baving procured bim several
otber commissions.
