Lapbael also counted among bis friends two of tbe greatest posts of
tbs time, Jacopo Lanarxaro nnd /tntonio Debaldeo, members of tbe
Neapolitan Wcadem/.
3nnL22nro, born in 1458, wns obliged, after tbe disasters tbnt bad
befallen bis country, to take relume at Lome under Leo X., and be tbere
wrote bis celebrated poem, " De pnrtu Virginis."
lebaldeo likewise cams to Lome at tbs beginning of Deo's ponti-
ficate. Ils bad composed a poem in bonour of tbe Dope, wbo received
bim witb distinction, and presented bim witb bvs bundred ducats.
Lottari was tbs first to recognise tbat Lapbael bad introduced tbe
portraits of tbese two poets into bis "Darnassus." We ma^ add witb
certainty tbat Lapbael also painted tbe portrait of lebaldeo in oil.
Lembo mentions it witb bigb praise in a letter of ^Vpril lytb, 1516, to
Lardinal Libiena. Lut it is not known wbat became of tbis portrait,
and none of tbose, said to be it, represent tbe rigbt person.
Lapbael also kept up a friendsbip and correspondence witb Ariosto,
according to Licbardson. We bavs already spoken of tbe letter, wbicb,
according to tbe same writer, was in tbe possession of tbe Obsvalier del
D0220, and in wbicb tbe painter asked tbe poet's advice as to tbe per-
sonages to be introduced in tbe " Dispute on tbe Lacrament." Ariosto,
bowever, did not remain long at Lome, bls bad known (liovanni de'
lVIedici before bis elevation to tbe pontificate, and bopsd to find a pro-
tector in bim. fVnd, indeed, tbs bops received bim witb mucb cordiality,
did not suffer bim to remain kneeling before bim, and promised bim bis
favour, llut, alas! tbe great poet obtained notbing, unless, indeed, it
were permission to publisb bis poem of " Orlando Durioso." Deceived
in bis expectations, be quitted Lome, determined never to return.
Amongst tbe men of bigb rank wbo protected Lapbael were tbe
Llardinals Liario and Diulio de' lVIedici, afterwards Llement VII. We
bave already alluded to tbe former; Oiulio de' lVIedici, natural son of
Oluliano, was legitimatized b^ bis uncle, Deo X., wbo first nominated bim
^rcbbisbop of Dlorencs, tben cardinal, and afterwards cbancellor. De
was of a serious disposition, mucb attacbed to bis family, and especially
