On wood; round, zo incbes cliameter. Digure to tbe knees.
Vbe Virgin encircles tbs Hol/ Lbild, wbo is seLtecl on ber knees, witb botb
arms, ancl leans ber bead against bis. Lotb look at tbs spectator; tbe motber
witb an expression of indescribable sweetness, tbs Infant Laviour witb cbild-like
placidity. On ber bead tbs Virgin wears a striped drapery, wbicb falls gracefully
on to ber neck, and ber sboulders are covered witb a ricb fringed scarf. On tbe
rigbt, tbs cbild propbst, ^sobn tbe Baptist, is looking up in adoration, bis rustic
cross in bis arms, and bis small bands reverent!/ clasped. Ibis picture takes its
name from tbs cbair wbicb forms tbe background. It is now in tbs Bitti Oaller/
at Florence, and two small sketcbes lor it are in tbs IVicar collection at Dills. IVs
believe it to bavs been executed wben Lapbael was engaged on bis greatest works;
it is, indeed, a master-piece, and no cop/ or engraving, bowsver superior, can give
a true idea of its indescribable cbarm. Bassavant relates tbat, baving been allowed
to examine it close!/ on an easel, be was surprised to find tbat tbe different tints
were not blended togetber, but laid side b/ side witb sucb consummate knowledge
of cbiaroscuro, tbat at a little distance tbe/ appear to melt into eacb otbsr witbout
break or transition.
It would be impossible to enumerate all tbs engravings alter tbis celebrated
and favourite work. Lapbael Vlorgben bas reproduced it mors tban once;
B. Desno/ers, O. lVluller, B. Bartolosri, and man/ otbers, bavs struggled to
render it laitblull/ in ever/ variet/ of st/Ie, and tbs ancient copies ol it are no
less numerous.

Uris is a similar composition to tbat of tbe " lVladonna della Ledia." Dbs
Virgin, seen in prollls, is seated on tbe left; ber rigbt arm is round tbs Do!/
Lbild, wbo is seated on ber knees, turning bis bead sligbtl/ round, as tbougb to
listen to tbs words of 8t. )obn, wbo stands bsbind bim in adoration. lbs motber's
bead is covered witb ricb draper/, and sbe looks loving!/ down upon ber son.
Ibis painting takes its name from tbe curtain wbicb forms tbs background.
Dbers are man/ copies of tbis beautiful picture, and wbicb real!/ is tbs
original was for a time a disputed point. IVs believe it to be in tbs Binacotbsk
of lVlunicb; and, in an/ case, tbs painting tbsre exbibited, under tbs title of tbs
"lVIadonna della Dsnda," is certainl/ from Lapbael's studio. Ibe Duke of
Devonsbire possesses a first skstcb lor tbis lVIadonna at bis seat at Lbatswortb,
and tbs entire work bas been man/ times engraved; b/ Baolo Doscbi, amongst
otbers.
