I'M: wim r»L LL^VLULSUL?
Hound picture, 2Z^ inckes diameter.
Iks Virgin, witb jsesus on ber knees, turns Ker bead to tks rigbt, so tbat Ker
full face is seen; Ker e/es are downcast. Ike pose ok Ker bead is noble and dig-
nibed, and Ker wbols appearance extremely beautiful. Ike ckild's figure, also, is
admirabl/ drawn, and full o5 like and action. Iks angels on eitker side ok tkis
group, witb candelabra in tkeir bands, are evidently additions, and tke principal
figures bave been a good deal restored. Ike " lkladonna witb tks Landelabra "
is in tke possession ok lVlr. lklunro ok London ; it kas been several tiines engraved
and copied.

Luirisr LLLirMv His Liioss.
tainted on wood, and afterwards transferred to canvas; keigkt 127 inckes,
widtk 91^ inckes.
Ibis painting is also called " I^o Lpasiino di Lecilia," because it was once in
tks ckurck ok 8. lVlaria dello 8pasiino at Palermo.
Lkrist, sinking to tks ground bsneatk tks weigkt ok bis cross, turns to tks
weeping women wko kollow Him, amongst wkom we recognise His motker, over-
wkelmed witk griek, and supported b/ 8t. jiobn, and Klar/lVlagdalene witk arms
outstretcbed towards Ker divine son. In tke foreground kneels a woman raising
tke Virgin's veil, and bekind Ker is anotker clasping Ker bands in anguisk. 8imon
ok durene grasps tbe cross to carr/ it bimsslk; a soldier raises bis spear to strike
tbe 8aviour, and compel Him to advance, wbilst anotber tries to drag Him up
witb a cord. 2k korseman bearing a standard opens tbs procession, and from tks
gates ok tbe town issue tbe lLoman judges, tbe soldiers, and tbe people. In tbs
background we see tbe two tbieves on tkeir wa/ to execution.
Ibis picture is in ever/ respect a master-piece; tbe arrangement is perfect-
tbere is not one superlluous figure; tbs beads are all admirably true to nature, and
notbing could exceed tbe beaut/ ok tbe 8aviour's bgure. Ike divine majest/ ok
suffering, tbs noble courage to endure, tbe buman weakness and sbrinking from
pain, combined witb beavenl/ resignation to His llatber's will, wbicb were united
in tbe great ideal ok Lkristendom, are expressed in a manner wortk/ ok tke sub-
ject ; and, altkougk " ibo 8pasimo " was intended kor tke altar ok a large ckurck,
and would onl/ be seen at a distance, tke treatment ok tbs details and tbe delicac/
ok colouring are no less remarkable; note, kor instance, tbe band ok Lbrist wbicb
rests on tbe ground, tbe drawing and execution are alike faultless, and it is besides
ok ideal trutb and beaut/; or, again, see bow tke frail and attenuated figure ok tbe
8aviour contrasts witb tbe strengtb and energ/ ok Amon ok L/rene, or witb tbe
coarse bealtb ok tbe executioner, and bow well tke drooping figures ok tbe weeping
women barmonirs witb tbe deep patbos ok tbs central group.

' Hie custom ok representing tbe bliadonna witb angels bolting candelabra is verx ancient,
and admirably expresses tbe idea ok Lbrist being tbe " Ingbt ok tbs world,"
