A rare edition, not mentioned by C a i 1 1 e t. The first book of the “Occulta Philo-
sophia” was published at Antwerp and Paris in 1531 but publication was not resumed
until November 1532 at Cologne. The inquisitor, Dominicans and theologians of the
university of Cologne made difficulties and delayed publication, so that the full text
of the three books appeared only in July, 1533, without name of place or printer.
Agrippa was one of those wayward geniuses and intellectual vagabonds so common
in the later- 15th and early 16th centuries. He was born in 1486, lectured at the
university of Dole, carried on alchemical experiments at Paris, lectured at Pavia,
practised alchemy again at Metz, became municipal physician of Fribourg, although
he had no medical degree, became physician to Louise of Savoy, queen mother of
France, practiced medicine at Antwerp during a pestilence, became imperial historio-
grapher and died in 1536. (Thorndike.) — Names of owners and stamp on title, a
few underlinings. A good copy of this remarkable work with several tables, cabalistic
figures in the text etc.

historiée descripta. Cologne, G. Kempen, 1582. With engraved title on
verso of it engr. portrait of the author, besides some nicely figurated
initials. 118 pp. 4to. Old blind tooled calf (back somewhat dam.)
f 80.—
Ad I: Ruelens et de Backer 203—204. Graesse I, 49. (who states wrongly
that this work contains 112 plates by Hogenberg) With the ‘Pentaplus’ Aitzinger
tried to simplify chronology. On page 24 occurs a passage in which the authors are
mentioned who wrote about the kings of Bohemia, Poland, Hungaria, Turkey and
other countries. — Ad II : G r a e s s e I, 49. The title has been engraved by F. Hogen-
berg and the portrait by an unknown ai-tist whose signature is F. M.Notes on
fly-lf. and first title. Ownership entry on second title. With an interesting old book-
plate.
