Painting: a name not only too smgular , but
aljo too Jhort or narrow, to express what is
here intended thereby : For we do not' only
express that Art, (as it is generally received)
hut also Drawing, Engraving, Etching, Limning>
Washing, Colouring and Dying ^ all which being con-
sidered in their proper extent ,insinitely exceed that curtail'd
name os Painting, which that 'we might join aU in one
proper and comprehensive word, we made choice os that
Greeks Compound POLYGRAPHICE.
To perswade any one to the Study or Practice of this
Art, would be a great sisty* since Ignoranee (which is
always blind) can never be able to judg aright: For to
him that already understands iishe labour would be uselest
and unprositable > to him which is already delighted there-
in, it would be needless and superssuous i and to the averfe
and ignorant would be the putting a Jewel into a S wines
