The brackish lak<; Kiuk Kiol, one of thc few we have seen in these parts, is siluale in the vast highland desert descending lo the north from the Kar&korum crest. The shores, especially where our tent is pitched, are sprinkled with a
scauty pasturage* of grass; leading to whieh may be discerned the well worn tracks of game. The slopes of the mountains are covered with drift-sand, similar to the snowbeds in olher regions. The eroded porlal-like aperture near the centre
indicates the entrance of an affluent, which takes its rise in the norlhern slopes of Changchenmo.
