in size. But colour is opaque, inanimate, and to
make masses of opaque colour look as if they were
moving is impossible without the application of
optical illusions and devices. These can never
replace the more ordinary, but, surely more
legitimate, means that painting has applied hitherto.

It is still too early to speak of any influence this
peculiar art may exercise. At a time when the
Whistler influence is so universally felt, it is re-
freshing, to say the least, to find such individual

some years past he had won notice at the Salon
of the “ Artistes franpais ” by work imbued with
high poetic charm — lovely eclogues of the twi-
light, decked with the grace of delicate flesh
tints, amid the streams and the leafage of
scenes Virgilian. He died near Rheims, his
native town, the Art Gallery there containing
one of his noblest efforts, V Ate. He disappears

deeply mourned by his family, and amid the
esteem and the regret of his fellow workers and
by r. d’jllzach all true lovers of art.

Their work, decadent
as it may be, is at least
not alien to our time.
These two painters search
for the truth in prevailing
conditions, and perhaps
come nearer than any of
our younger painters to help
blending all the character-
istic excellences of the
Occidental and Oriental
style of painting into one
