original positions and these were incor-
porated into, and to some extent governed
the lay-out and the levels of the various
parts. The retaining walls, generally, are of
local hand-made bricks, in some cases laid
dry with earth joints to allow of over-
growing with small rock plants. The wall
copings, paving and steps are of roughly
squared York stone. Panels in the stone
paving have fillings of either brick on edge,
turf, tile on edge, green slate or blue
pebbles. 00000
In view “ B ” the water parterre is seen
in the foreground, with the formal garden
beyond at a higher level and the west wing
of the house in the background. 0 0

The lily pools are edged with York
stone, the water level being kept to within
about 3 in. below the surrounding surface.
They are stocked with gold-fish and carp.

View “A” shows the steps up from the
angle of the water parterre to the middle
terrace between the formal garden and
the Great Plat. The stone balustrade and
central steps up to the latter can be seen
in this view. The risers of the steps
generally are formed of courses of red
roofing tile. 00000
The arrangement of the four raised beds
of Alpines in the terrace formed by the
angle of the house is indicated in view
“ C.” These beds were introduced to
mask, to some extent, the unsymmetrical
angle of the terrace at this point.

View “ D " illustrates the lower part of
the great stairway of some thirty steps,
leading up to the house, on the east side.
The two circular central flights are inter-
sected by the broad grass terrace which
forms a base to the house on this side.
