SOME PASTELS BY MRS. E.
GRANGER-TAYLOR a 0
AMONG the artists who are at the
present time helping greatly to impress
upon the public the value of pastel as a
painting medium Mrs. Granger-Taylor
occupies a position of much distinction.
She has earned it fairly by doing work
which is not only personal in outlook and
really individual in style, but also un-
usually accomplished in technical ex-
pression. She draws with the confidence
that comes from correct understanding of
realities and accurate analysis of forms, not
pedantically and academically, but with
vivacity and a pleasant flexibility ; she has
a thoroughly sound sense of construction,
she is shrewdly observant of tone subtle-
ties and deals sensitively with effects of
lighting, and her executive method—the
way in which she manages her medium—
is significantly certain and direct. This
combination of qualities gives to her pro-
ductions generally an air of conviction
which can be the more heartily welcomed
because at the moment it is too often
wanting in the work of our younger
artists. 000000
In fact, in almost everything that Mrs.
Granger-Taylor does there is a satisfying
freedom from that vagueness of intention
and inefficiency of accomplishment which
can be counted among the worst defects
