the arts has been good to the painter, for
not only are musical instruments in general
exquisite objects, but musicians seen in
concert are very beautiful. No aspersion
is hereby cast on them as individuals—but
only a few of them can, as individuals,
provide the desirable mass. The rhythmic
thrill of a series of violin bows, backed by
the grand rotundities of 'cello and bass, is

enough to inspire any artist. The con-
ductor is the apex of the design as of the
performance, though to catch our active
modern conductors in any attitude for
more than a second must be puzzling work.
Sir Thomas in the Provinces is an example
of Mr. Cooper's pen and wash drawing.
We may look forward to more ambitious
efforts from him on the same theme, for
which such drawings are the preparation.
