EWCASTLE - UPON - TYNE.—
Sixty-one exhibitions, each illustra-
ting in turn some important phase or
period of art, have been formed since the
opening of the Laing Gallery in 1904.
These exhibitions have been noteworthy
in popularity and educational value, and
the most recent of the series has certainly
been one of the most interesting. It con-
sisted of selected modern pictures in oils
illustrating the developments of the last
twenty-five years. Commencing with
Watts and Millais, the show contained
work by many contemporary artists, such
as Mr. Arnesby Brown, Mrs. Laura

“BEHIND THE SCENES.” BY
SIR WILLIAM ORPEN, R.A.

(Newcastle Exhibition, by cour-
tesy of Oldham. Corporation)

Knight, Mr. Philip Connard, Mr. Bertram
Priestman, Mr. A. J. Munnings, Sir James
Guthrie, and Sir William Orpen. We
illustrate Behind the Scenes by this last
artist, a a a 0 0 0

The section devoted to portraiture was
particularly strong, including notable work
by J. S. Sargent, Sir J. J. Shannon, and
Sir George Reid. 0000
A separate panel was devoted to paint-
ings illustrating the more recent develop-
ments of the British School. Here were
represented Professor Rothenstein, Pro-
fessor Tonks, Mr. Duncan Grant, and
others. 000000
