PARIS.—Henri Lebasque, four of whose
pictures we reproduce, is one of the
group of eminent artists who seceded last
year from the Societe Naticnale des Beaux
Arts to inaugurate a third salon called the
“ Salon des Tuileries.” It cannot be gain-
said that he is one of the most striking and
original personalities of the contemporary
French school. Born at Champigne (Maine-
et-Loire), his strong bent for painting
manifested itself at a very early age, and he
was able to devote himself to art, studying
in Bonnat's studio at the Ecole Nationale
des Beaux Arts. 0000
Lebasque did not take kindly to academic
instruction, feeling that its cold formulas
chilled his ardour, but nevertheless in this
period he painted some very fine portraits,
whose classic composition does credit to
his knowledge. But he was soon to develop
in the direction of plein air painting and to
become a master therein. Though some-
times the subjects he chooses are land-
scapes in the strict sense of the word, his
talent is more fully displayed when he
places in these landscapes one or more
figures which become the real subject of the
picture : these are nearly always girls in a
48

garden, leaning against a balustrade, lying
in a hammock, tasting the joys of dolce far
niente in a tent or sitting amid the cushioned
ease of a skiff. 0000

This side of his work is very well
exemplified in the two photogravure re-
productions on the opposite page. 0
In the painting of feminine attire, light
and filmy, in the warm atmosphere of a
sunny terrace, Lebasque finds real delight;
and scarves or vividly coloured parasols
supply him with a pretext for the use of
gay notes of colour. Where he excels is in
placing a figure in transparent shade, so
that, in high summer, the near-by rays of
sun seem to vibrate and accentuate the
coolness. 00000
Lebasque formerly exhibited at the
“ Artistes Franpais,” then he went on to
the “ Societe Nationale ” ; he was one
of the founders of the Autumn Salon. His
reputation has established itself without
fuss or sensational publicity ; he has taken
his rightful place through the sheer per-
sonal merit of his very calm and healthy
talent which does honour to the art of
France. M. Valotaire.
