PHILADELPHIA

HILADELPHIA.—Four concurrent

exhibitions were offered to the public
on November 4th at the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts : the Twenty-
first Annual Exhibition of Water-Colours,
the Twenty-second Annual Exhibition of
Miniatures, the Edward Hornor Coates
Memorial Collection, presented by Mrs.
Coates and the Chester Springs Summer
School Exhibition. Mr. Coates was Presi-
dent of the Academy 1890-1906, Treasurer
1878-1885, and Director 1877-1906. The
collection includes a number of works of
the Barbizon group (among them a remark-
ably fine Corot), landscapes and marines
by the late Wm. T. Richards, a portrait of
Mr. Coates by Mr. Robert H. Vonnoh and
a portrait bust of him by Mr. Charles
Grafly. The central group of the principal
gallery, water-colours by Mr. Charles H.
Woodbury, vibrating with colour, includ-
ing a study of Mount Pelee, was flanked on
one side by a group of virile rocky coast
scenes painted in gouache by Miss
Catherine Wharton Morris, and on the
other mainly by Mr. Frank W. Benson’s
group of water-colour landscapes, a beauti-
ful example depicting a lily pond, The
Mirror, and a figure subject, The Camp
Fire, being the central attractions. 0
Other groups of interest on the adjacent
walls were by Mr. Birger Sandzen, Mr.
Paul Gill, Mr. Wilmot E. Heitland, Mr.
William C. Watts, Mr. Yarnall Abbott,
Mr. Childe Hassam and Mr. Alfred
Hayward. Mr. John Singer Sargent was
represented by a water-colour of unusually
sympathetic quality—Onthe Beach at Baja,
lent by Edmund G. Hamersly, Esq., and
a capital street scene was by Mrs. A. L. G.
Brennan, entitled Edgartown’s Busiest
Corner. Interiors with figures, good in per-
spective and illumination were The Woods
Supper by Mr. George H. Hallowed, and In
Pose by Mr. J. Scott Williams, both of which
appear opposite. Groups by Miss VioletOak-
ley and Miss Edith Emerson of delightful
little pictures of Spain and Italy in water-
colour with some portraits in sanguine were
hung in the North Corridor. Mr. Robert
Riggs sent a group of attractive sketches of
Algeria. Mr. Thornton Oakley, Mr. Nicola
D’Ascenzo, Mr. W. A. Hofstetter and Miss
Felide Waldo Howell contributed groups
of water-colours of exceptional charm. 0

“THE CAMP FIRE*” WATER-COLOUR
BY FRANK W. BENSON

(21st Annual Exhibition of Water-
Colours, Pennsylvania Academy,
Philadelphia, 1923)

Among the drawings in black and white
was a series from the Strait of Magellan
done with pen and ink by Mr. Rockwell
Kent, and a fine touch of character in a
drawing, Rag Pickers, in the same medium
by Mr. Charles Hargens. Recent etchings,
mainly of the partly completed Washing-
ton Cathedral by Mr. Joseph Pennell, ap-
pear in a group that ably sustain the
reputation of the veteran artist. There were
a number of delicate drawings in pencil,
silver-point and three crayons by Mr.
Philip L. Hale, beautiful etchings of
Bruges and Louvain by Mr. J. C.Vondrous,
and wood engraved portraits by Mr.
Timothy Cole. Miniatures exhibited in
Gallery I. were not exclusively portraits.
Figures, flowers, landscapes and still life
also were subjects of these exquisite little
works. The Medal of Honour was awarded
to Miss Rosina C. Boardman for her
costumed portrait, The Burnoose. 0
