York: Thomas R. Proctor Prize)

NEW YORK.—The First Altman Prize
of $1,000 was awarded to Mr. Louis
Betts, N.A., for his figure subject “ Eliza-
beth Betts of Wortham, centring the
Vanderbilt Gallery of the National
Academy of Design’s Winter Exhibition
opening November 17th and closing on
December 16th ; second Altman Prize of
$500 to Mr. Eugene F. Savage for a very
important composition of many well-
drawn nude figures entitled Recessional.
The Carnegie Prize of $500 was awarded
to Mr. Daniel Garber, N.A., for his land-
scape The Quarry at Byram, and the
Thomas R. Proctor Prize of $200 for the
best portrait went to Miss Mary F. R.
Clay’s Elizabeth, which appears above.
The Isidor Medal for the best figure com-
position was granted to Mrs. Marie
Danforth Page's Girls and to Mr. Carl
Lawless the J. Francis Murphy Prize of

$150, for his snow-covered landscape The
Covered Bridge, Winter. The Julia A.
Shaw Prize of $300 for sculpture given to
Miss Harriet W. Frishmuth for her nude
bronze figure The Vine, to Miss Evelyn B.
Longman, N.A., the Elizabeth N. Watrous
Gold Medal for a Memorial to Theodore
C. Williams with a portrait sculptured in
low relief in white marble, and to Mr. Leo
Friedlander was awarded the Helen Foster
Barnett Prize for his portrait of Darcey F.

Hanging committees of exhibitions dif-
fer widely in their views of grouping the
secondary choice of works accepted by the
jury. This one, acting probably under a
system of alternative values, has left much
to be desired in the way of concentration
of works of concordant tone and colour
about the principal points of interest and
thereby adding much to the effect of the
