VIENNA—MILAN

VIENNA. — Alfred Gerstenbrand, a
member of the Vienna Secession, has of
late given several opportunities in the
various exhibitions of gauging the merits
of his art and the wide range of his sub-
jects, chiefly landscapes and village scenes
akin to those in his oil-colour painting here
reproduced, Holiday on Lake Mond, one of
those lovely spots abounding in different
parts of Upper Austria, Salzburg and the
Salzkammergul. Here nature offers en-
trancing scenes to the artist, as also de-
lightful ones of village life, for here old
customs and traditions are maintained
faithfully. The one here depicted shows
strength of structure, able draughtsman-
ship and right study of the subject, for it
was well visioned and built up before
brush was set to canvas. Gerstenbrand has
a sure stroke, a quick eye, and a fine feeling

for colour, which is vivid and refreshing.
He also proves that he has a well-defined
decorative leaning and an expert eye in the
choosing of his subject. His work is sym-
pathetic and has a certain individual touch
which makes it pleasant to watch the
growth of his artistic output, for he has
strong convictions relative to his art. a

MILAN.—An interesting exhibition at
the Pesaro Gallery in Via Manzoni is
that of two artists, the painter Giuseppe
Amisani and the sculptor Eugenio Pellini.

Amisani is undoubtedly one of the most
attractive figure painters now working in
Milan. Born at Mede di Nomellina of
parents of modest means, he had at first a
hard struggle to obtain his position. Even
