for theatrical costumes have a markedly
personal quality; he is doing admirable
service in the present day crusade against
the obsolete conventions by which stage
art has too long been hampered. 0

One of our colour-plates shows some
very interesting armorial work by Mr. F.
V. Burridge. The lettering on the panel
was drawn out by H. L. Christie; the
lettering and plaques were cut by G. T.
Friend and the enamelling was carried out
by H. G. Murphy. 0000
In an age of narrow specialisation,
Mr. A. H. Fincham has proved that he
is a versatile craftsman, able to express
his ideas vigorously and effectively in
various media. The few illustrations
herewith indicate the character and scope
of his work. His designs for woodwork
are simple but decidedly interesting and
attractive. As a metal worker he keeps
rather closely to familiar forms and con-
ventions, but he handles his material
sympathetically and with understanding.
The panel of carved wood and gesso shows
his treatment of lettering, a branch of
applied art to which he has devoted special
study. 000000

BOOKBINDING DESIGNED
BY MISS R. PHILPOTT
(Arlington Gallery)

We illustrate two delightful tooled
bookbindings by Miss R. Philpott, whose
work requires no introduction to our
readers. Her designs are invariably re-
fined and distinguished and her technique
unassailable. She is one of the few artists
who are keeping alive the fine tradition of
this beautiful craft. 000

OLD NAVAL PRINTS.

A HANDSOMELY produced work on
“ Old Naval Prints, their Artists and
Engravers,” is about to be issued from the
offices of The Studio, in an edition
limited to 1,500 numbered copies. The
Editor has gathered together some
100 illustrations (including 24 mounted
plates in colours) representive of the
work of many eminent artists, British and
foreign, who have exercised their talent
in depicting naval actions in the days of
hemp and canvas. The text is written by
Commander C. N. Robinson, who has
been a student of the subject for many
years and is the possessor of an unique
collection of naval prints. This book may
be described not only as a companion
volume to “ Old English Sporting Prints,”
but also as, in a sense, complementary to
the recent Studio volume on “ Ship
Models,” which was over-subscribed on
publication. 0000a
