LIVERPOOL—NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE

first unknown, the scheme had to be one
capable of further extension. The quarry-
sufficed. The level space inside the semi-
circular wall was taken out of the slope,
and the stone supplied the dry walls,
piers and rough paving. Cinders and
builders’ rubbish tipped into the yard
were harrowed into position to form the
upper terrace. The axis line was worked
on to the dining-room window and an
unrestricted view over trees and house-
tops to a spire on a neighbouring hill,
gives a vista worthy of Le Notre himself, 0

Mr. W. Egginton, whose work was
recently exhibited at the Fine Art Society’s
Galleries in New Bond Street, is well
known to many of our readers as a painter
of moorland scenery. Formerly resident
in Liverpool, he now lives at Teignmouth,
within easy reach of the wild Dartmoor
scenery, which he depicts so well. Stormy
Weather, which we reproduce, is a typical
example of his water-colour drawing.
His sketching classes in Devon and else-
where have proved a great attraction to
art students. 00000

“STORMY WEATHER.” WATER-
COLOUR BY W. EGGINTON, R.I.

(By courtesy of the Viscountess Chelmsford)

Newcastle - upon - tyne. — At

the sixteenth Annual Exhibition of
works by artists of the Northern Counties
held in the Laing Gallery, the general
standard of work was exceedingly high. An
important exhibit in the oil section was the
large canvas by A. K. Lawrence—the
winner of the Prix de Rome, 1923—which
is a design for the decoration of the Chancel
of a church, commemorating the Five
Armies. James Clark,R.I.,added distinction
to the exhibition by several canvases. As a
Father pitieth his Children gives proof of
his practised skill in the composition of
figure subjects, and it is marked by a strong
individuality. 0000

In the water-colour section there was a
large increase in the number of exhibits. A
position of honour was given to the drawing
by Harry Watson, R.W.S., entitled In the
Itchen Valley,'a. subtle and poetic composi-
tion, fine in tone and colour. In the centre
of the opposite panel was Percy Lancaster’s
Pont-y-Pair; there is much beautiful
painting in this landscape. Winter Sun-
shine is a characteristic example by that
distinguished executant Reginald Smith.
