work; not, we hasten to add, that we
would have wished for another in its
stead, but because the scenes, the life, the
treatment and the sentiment are all so very
English that the appeal to the French
mind is not obvious. But, whatever the
reason, to an Englishman this Jane Eyre
comes as an old friend in a new guise. The
re-reading has again impressed us with the
restrained power, the gift of characterisa-
tion, the fertility of imagination and the
economy in style displayed so miraculously

sonage. It would have been an imperti-
nence in an illustrator to embark on
“ decorative ” flights at the expense of
Miss Bronte. Miss Gabain has chosen the
better way of realistic illustration for a
realistic novelist, and has entered into the
