work; not, we hasten to add, that we
would have wished for another in its
stead, but because the scenes, the life, the
treatment and the sentiment are all so very
English that the appeal to the French
mind is not obvious. But, whatever the
reason, to an Englishman this Jane Eyre
comes as an old friend in a new guise. The
re-reading has again impressed us with the

tion, the fertility of imagination and the
