EDINBURGH

EDINBURGH.—The Shore Wood., by
Mr. A. R. Sturrock, is the work of one
of the younger Edinburgh artists, whose
love lies in depicting the Border landscapes
and being amongst the wide expanses of
the country. Always seeking the genuine in
art his sympathy is with all new move-
ments, but, like many others, he finds it
rather difficult to discover amongst the
many schools and “ isms,” which are the
genuine and which are not. In viewing his
own work one has no other feeling than
that of fully appreciating what he has
attained, as well as being enfolded in the
spirit of his outlook. In none of his work
does he seek originality, but allows it to
seek him, and when it does, you may be
sure that it becomes part of himself without
becoming strained to the result of outre
mannerisms. In all his exhibited paintings
in the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal

Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, and
that of the Society of Scottish Artists there
is always an uncommon distinction of com-
position, each one being thoughtfully
carried out, and generally in a scheme of
light and vibrating colours. As an artist
he does not trust to accidentals, or leaving
a piece of perhaps, considered good
painting, because of that; the sort that the
candid critical friend will circularly de-
scribe with his thumb, and which if cut
out might fill a three by three inch frame.
Nor does Mr. Sturrock require to decide
between his own natural impressions and
what he thinks should be his impressions.
Art to him is a common language in which
he does not try to distinguish himself by
following others, or by mere tricks of
painting, but only by the power and beauty
of that which he personally wishes to
express. E. A. T.
