GLASGOW.—That the space annually
allotted to the graphic arts in the prin-
cipal Scottish exhibitions has been for a
number of years rather limited, has been
felt by many who specially practise those
arts. The outcome of their thought was the
organisation, some three years ago, of

“ The Society of Artist Printers.” That it
has certainly justified its existence was fully
revealed in its recent exhibition (held in the
Galleries of Messrs. James M'Clure and
Son), by the high standard of work shown,
embodying etchings, dry-points, aquatints,
lithographs, wood block prints and wood

Originally organised with a membership
of fifteen and a stipulated rule that their
number should not exceed 30, it was in-
teresting to note that only five short of that
number had been attained under the presi-
dency of Mr. Allan D. Mainds. In much of
the pure line work shown in various exhi-
bitions, to instance etchings and certain
wood-cuts, one feels that the artist,
having found a line beautiful in one
arrangement, has similarly employed it
in an entirely different one, victimising
himself to a mannerism with poor results.
There is perhaps nothing more telling than
the use of line in expressing to the observer
