NEW YORK.—Academicians and Asso-
ciates numbering 165, and 221 non-
members, exposed works of oil painting
and sculpture in the 99th annual exhibition
of the National Academy of Design,
March 22nd to April 20th. The Altman
Prize of $1,000 was awarded to Mr. W. L.
Lathrop, N.A., for his landscape. The
Jericho Road, a delightful bit of autumnal
colour ; the second Altman Prize of $500
to Mr. Charles S. Chapman, A.N.A., for
his study of the trees of California, In the
Redwoods. Capital portraits of Franklin
de Haven, N.A., by Mr. Ernest Ipsen,
A.N.A., of Hayley Lever, by Mr. Wayman
Adams, A.N.A., of the Artist Gorson, by
Mr. Nicolai Fechin, and of “ Mr. W.,'' by
Mr. Edmund C. Tarbell, N.A. gave distinc-
tion to the show in the Vanderbilt Gallery,
the central canvas there being Mr. Cameron
Burnside’s Toilet of Venus, an important
academic work including some excellent
painting of the nude. The principal
features of the Centre Gallery were a full-

length portrait of Major-General Scott, by
Mr. Howard Russell Butler, N.A. ; figure-,
subjects, The Model, by Miss Gertrude:
Fiske, A.N.A., Romance, by Mr. Philip L_
Hale, A.N.A., Woman and Baby with.
Goats, by Mr. John E. Costigan, and a fine:
portrait by Mr. De Witt C. Lockman, N.A.
Among the realists in this exhibition should
be mentioned Mr. William Ritschel, N.A.,.
whose work, South Sea Sport,was an admir-
able transcript of nature. Mr. Frederick J.
Waugh, N.A., also gives us a fine example
of marine painting in his virile canvas, In
the Tropics. Eugene Castello.
WINNIPEG.—It is exactly five years
since Mr. Walter J. Phillips was in-
troduced to our readers. That he continues;
his progress as a highly capable artist in-
wood block colour printing may be seen,
from the two examples given, one of which.
{Norman Bay, No. 2) was awarded first
prize last year at the International Exhibi-
tion of Prints, Los Angeles. 0 01
