ing the remains, we know that the people re-
lied mainly on agriculture supplemented by
animal husbandry and gathering.
Radiocarbon datings provide some scien-
tific date about the Age of the Peiligang Cul-
ture, see Table I, page 116. These data showed
that the Peiligang Culture dates to about
7000-8000 years ago, about 1000 years earlier
than the Yangshao Culture. So the Peiligang
Culture is an early Neolithic Period culture.1

II. The farm tools and tillage in the Peiligang
Culture Period
There were many tools unearthed from the
Peiligang Culture sites. The polished stone
implements are the most typical. Some of
them are the symbols of the Peiligang Cul-
ture.
The tool assemblage marking the Peiligang
Culture included bone and chipped stone
