GRITH LERCHE

Fig. 34. The harrow from Viborg (after Lerche 1982, fig. 3). □ Die Egge von Viborg.

Sample D 2790 (A 6771); Hg 10799; NM VIII
A 5433. Submitted by A. Steensberg. The up-
per flat surface of the ard head is furnished
with only one square hole to the left for a peg
as support for a share, which means that the
ard has been tilted to the right during plough-
ing imitating the work of a plough leaving
furrow soil to the right. The find is in the
Prehist.-Hist.Dept, of the National Museums
Mus.No. D 2790. It was published as the ard
head from Mors (Laegdsmand 1968, 61;
Lerche & Steensberg 1980, 84). Fig. 33.
Viborg; harrow. K-3139: 1140±100 BP;
cal.years 890 AD; 810-990 AD cal. ± 1 st.d.
Wood of oak (Quercus sp.). A sample of the
sap wood with c. 20 year rings from the pre-
served part of a harrow frame found in a sec-
ondary place as part of a well construction
excavated during trenching in a medieval

courtyard and house layer in Set. Pederstrasde
in the town of Viborg, Matr.No. 295a, Viborg
County, North Jutland, Denmark. The find
of a harrow in Denmark and traces of its
work at Lindholm Hoje suggest the use of a
real plough prior to harrowing.
The sample made up 55.8 % of a normal
filling. Sample VSM 355D 70; Pd 5336. NM
VIII A 60 44. Submitted by E. Levin Nielsen
and J. Troels-Smith. The harrow is in Viborg
Stifts Museum (Lerche 1982, 184-191; Lerche
& Steensberg 1980, 86; ramskou 1981, 105).
