A TBEATISE ON HATHA YOGA

1. Once Chancla Kapali went to the hermitage
of Gheranda Muni, and, having saluted him with
meekness and devotion,
Chanda Kapali said ■
2. 0 Yogeswar! 0 Yogesh! 0 Lord ! I wish ncw
to hear Ghatasthayoga (Physiological yoga) which
is the cause of Tatwadnyana (knowledge of truth).
Gheranda replied
3. Well asked, indeed, 0 brave one : I shall tell
thee what thou hast asked me. 0 son ! preserve it
with deligence.
4. There is no bond like that of Maya (delusion),
there is no force stronger than Yoga, there is no
friend truer than Knowledge, and there is no enemy
worse than Pride.
5. As by practice and knowledge of the alpha-
bets, all sciences can be learned, so by first practis-
ing Yoga one attains by degrees the knowledge of
the truth (Tatwadnyana).
6. From good and bad works the Ghatas (or
bodies) of men are produced, and the body gives
