continued like a rotating mill.
7. As the Ghati-yantra (a rotating mili) revol-
ves up and down, moved by bulloeks, so the Jiva
(human soul) passes through life and death moved
by Karma.
8. As an unbaked earthen pot is soon dissolved
when plaeed in water, so the body; it must be
strengthened and purified by the fire of Yoga in
€>rder to harden it.
THE SEVEN SADHANAS QR PRACTICES,
9. The seven practices or Sadhanas which
appertain to Yoga are the following :—Purification,
strengthening, steadiness, calmness, lightness,
perception, and isolation.
10—12. 1st—S'odhan or purification isdone by the
six Karmas (to be mentioned shori Jy); 2nd—Asana
or posture gives Driddhata or strength ; 3rd—Mudra
gives Sthirata or steadiness ; 4th—Pratyahar gives
Dhairyata or courage or calmness ; 5th—Pranayama
gives liglitness or Laghima ; 6th—Dhyana gives
perception ( Pratyakshatwa ) of self ; and 7th-
Samadhi gives isolation (Nirliptata), which is verily
eraancipatiom
'THE S'ODITANAS OR PURIFICATION.
13.. (1) Dhouti; (2) Basti; (3)Neti; (4) Lou-
kiki, (5) Trataka, (6) Ivapalabhati are the Shatkar-
mas or six praetiees known as S'odhana:
1.—DHOUTI.
14. Dhouti is of four kinds, and they clear away
