10b Discs are distinguished by an incised border on one or both seal faces. Most of these

83

seals are in ivory. An unusual morphological feature of CMS III 286, 302 and IV 19D is the
plastic ribbing on the edges. All of the examples carry motifs on both seal faces. The quality
of the workmanship ranges from good to very good.

Decoration and dating

Several motifs regualrly decorate 10b Discs including leaves, crosses with Zwickelfiillung,

hatched triangles and dentate bands. CMS III 394 carries signs of the Archanes script. These

motifs are typical of the EM III-MM IA (-? ) Border/Leaf Complex and all of the seals of this

subclass are assigned to this style-complex. Further help for the dating are the two 10b Discs

which were excavated from stratified contexts:

CMS III 394 EM III-MM IA Archanes, Rm. Ill
CMS 112 258 MM I Palaikastro

Stratigraphic, typological and stylistic evidence points to a dating fot 10b Discs in EM III-MM IA

or perhaps slightly later.

10c Discs comprise a sub-
class of heterogeneous seals in
soft stone, bone and ivory. They
range in diameter from 1.0 to
2.3 cms. CM 41 and CMS III
172 deviate from ±0a Discs in
that they are only roughly circu-
lar in plan. CMS III 426 is
plano-convex. CMS 112 42 and 51, two seals of very good quality workmanship, are unusual in
that parallel to the stringhole axis the planes of the seal faces are biconvex. These two seals com-
bine the characteristics of the Disc and Discoid. The edges of CMS V 27 are bevelled on one
