SHAPE CLASSES

lie Bordered Discoids are biconvex with an incised heavy border on both faces. The edges
of these seals are round and their contours abruptly meet those of the seal faces. The incised
border is also an identifying characteristic of two related subclasses, the 10b Discs and 28b Reels.
Both extant lie Discoids are small, and the diameter and thickness of CS 95 measure 1.25 and
0.5 cms. respectively. The material is soft, shiny stone and the workmanship is of very good
quality.

Decoration and dating

Both lie Discoids belong to the EM III-MM IA (-? ) Border/Leaf Complex. CS 95 bears
signs of the Archanes script (Motif 56:1 and 2), a kind of decoration characteristic of this style-
complex. CMS X 40 shows a Ziveipass and hatched triangles on one side and leaves on the other.

Class 12: EPOM1A (shoulder shape), ivory

The term "Epomion" is borrowed from CMS IV but here is used in a broader sense than
by Sakellarakis. Epomia are in the shape of a rectangular plate with an upwardly arcing flange
on one side.

Except for CMS IV 19, which is in bone, Epomia seem to be in ivory. CMS III 258 and
IV 1 differ from the typical shape in that the grip is low and does not curve over to the side-.
These two seals are almost wedge-like in profile. Epomia show four different types of string-
holes. Most common is an arrangement of two parallel stringholes, either parallel or perpendicu-
lar to the length of the seal (fig. a). A A stringhole bored through the length of the grip (fig. b)
or perpendicular to it (fig. c) are also known. The fourth method of boring consists of two holes
which meet at an angle either on the inside or outside of the grip (fig. d). Epomia average 2.4 x
