17b Hemicylinders
are in "serpentine" ranging
in shade from pale or olive
green to black. These seals
are heterogeneous in their di-
mensions and proportions.
The bases of CMS 112 80
and 161 are broad and near-
ly square but most Hemicyl-
inders in soft stone have proportionately narrow bases. Except for CMS III 147, which has a A
stringhole, all of these Hemicylinders have a single boring which runs through the length of the
seal. The workmanship ranges- from fair to good in quality.

Decoration and dating

Several motifs decorate 17b Hemicylinders including men, dogs, Z-whirls, a centrally radiat-
ing motif (Motif 26:7) and vessels. Except for CMS III 147, all of the examples are assigned to
the MM IB-II Malia Workshop Complex. Further evidence for the dating is that three 17b Hemi-
cylinders were excavated from the MM II Malia Workshop. Stylistic and stratigraphic evidence
supports a dating of MM IB-II for this subclass.

17c) hard stone

CMS 112 227

CMS 112 227

The sole representative of this subclass, CMS 112 227, is in translucent, spotted, brown
agate. It measures 1.9 x 0.9 x 0.6 cms. Grooves resembling four abstract leaves ordered in alter-
nating directions are carved on the back. A stringhole is bored through the length of the seal.
The workmanship is excellent.

Decoration and dating

CMS 112 227 is engraved with signs of the Hieroglyphic B script and it is assigned to the
MM II (-?) Hieroglyphic Deposit Group.
