XVIe SIÈCLE. — Ecole flamande. FUTS DE COLONNES
PAR V. VRIESE.
L'ufage d'orner tout ou partie des Fûts de colonnes remonte,
comme nous le prouverons par des exemples, aux temps les
plus reculés. Lorfque l'on diminua le diamètre des colonnes à
partir du tiers de la hauteur, une moulure ou aftragalc cachait
ordinairement l'arête ou jarret formé en cet endroit, & des
ornements de toute nature venaient couvrir le tiers inférieur
du fût. Quoique cette pratique remonte aux temps de la
décadence romaine, ce genre d'ornementation, dont la Renaif-
sance a tiré un grand parti, préfente un côté rationnel, en ce
qu'il donne une certaine solidité d'afpefl à la partie du fût
voifine de la bafe. — La décoration ci-deffus eft infpirée des

The habit of ornamenting part or the whole of Fuß s of
columns takes its origin, as vve will prove, in the moft ancient
times. Wen the diameter of the columns is diminifhed from
the third of the élévation, a mouldingor aßragal hidesgene-
rally the ridgn or faliant angle formed in thisplace, and Orna-
ments of every defeription cover the fuft's inferior part.
Though this practice comes from the Roman downfall, thef'e
Ornaments, which were much ufed during the Revival of arts,
prefent a moft rational fide as giving a certain folidity of
appearance to the lower part of the fult. — The décoration
here above was infpired by the antique arabefque-panels.
