The Ołobok Yirgin belongs to the numerous group of Romanestjue cult statues, scattered
over whole Europę and especially well represented in Spain and France. Besides our statuę, only
two more examples of this type are preserved in Poland, both showing no stylistic analogies to
the Ołobok Virgin — one of them at Bardo in Silesia,3 the second one, also Silesian but of un-
known provenance and of a slightly later date — now in the National Museum in Warsaw.4 ■

The figures of the enthroned Virgin with the Child, mentioned or described in texts as early
as in the 8th century5, seem to owe their popularity, growing from the sęcond half of the lOth
century on, to the statuę of Mary with the Infant Christ, founded by bishop Stephen II about
946 for the Cathedral in Clcrmont Ferrand.

It was carved in wood and covered with a golden sheet by a great local artist — architect,
sculptor and goldsmith — Adelelmus and his brother Adam, and, being placed behind the main
altar, it attracted crowds of pilgrims to the Cathedral. This miraculous figurę was lost in the
