26. Caspar Netscher (?), Poitrait of Dorothea von Holstein, Muzeum Mazurskie, Olsztyn

one of the arrangement of the hand of a lady from the Perponcher family2. As far as the
formal analysis is concerned, K. Wróblewska stresses a freedom of the figure's composition,
a precise colouristic balance, an idealization of the face and a singular treatment of the
hair, scattered with apparent carelessness, which adds much charm and elegance to the
portrait. The only inferior element here is, according to her, the brown-olive ground, too
modest in relation to the rest of the picture1.
h) The identification of the portrayed person as well as the remarks concerning the formal
features, done by K. Wróblewska seem to be correct, although considering the generał icono-
graphic conception one could conjecture that the portrayed person had some links with
Mary Magdalen (e.g. name ?), but the suggested authorship of Nason in this case should be
absolutely excluded. The painterly treatment of garments and draperies, the dynamie
brushwork and reflections done with elear and occasionally contrasting colours are quite
foreign to Nason's style. The drawing of the hand in relation to other of Nason's works
is also quite different — more slender and fluent, reminding one of the slightly conven-
tional but fine hands of women in C. Netscher's portraits.
