INVESTIGATIONS AT ASSOS

the pavement. There were many fragments of marble found in
this vicinity, including a beautifully cut Doric entablature of
small dimensions, and pieces of wall blocks and base mouldings.
These have been conjecturally restored as a small building or
monument which may have occupied this stylobate. 'The North-
east and Northwest porticos were much higher than the South-
west. The Southeast portico was entirely destroyed. On the
epistyle of the Northwest portico was an inscription of large
deeply cut letters, 14 cm. high, parts of which have been pub-
lished at different times by various travellers. Our expedition
has unearthed two additional blocks and the inscription as far
as recovered reads as follows:—-
