A Newly Discoyered Work by Yeit Stoss
A late Gothic Gethsemane, sculptured in wood, preserved
(albeit with considerable damages) in the parish church at Ptasz-
kowa (district of Nowy Sącz), in the years 2002—2003 under-
went restoration works in Stanisław Stawowiak’s atelier. A tho-
rough renovation - above all the removal of later sculptural
completions and of a thick layer of repaintings — have restored,
at the present State of preservation, the pristine plastic form
of this work of art, which enabled researchers to carry out
comparative studies. On the basis of their results, Magdalena
Stawowiak has ascertained the relief to be an original creation
of Veit Stoss’s from the last years of his stay in Cracow. The
sculpture was destined for one of the Cracovian churches,
probably Our Lady’s. On 18 May 2003 the Author presented
the results of her studies at a conference held beside the reno-
vated sculpture, temporarily displayed in the District Museum
in Nowy Sącz, while on 5 June 2003 - at the session of the
Committee of Art History of the Academy of Sciences and Let-
ters in Cracow. A fuli version of Magdalena Stawowiak’s ana-
lysis will appear in the successive issue of the Folia Historiae Ar-
tium.
